Thumboormozhi – the largest Butterfly garden in Kerala
Butterflies are the most beautiful and interesting creatures on our planet. A butterfly garden can be created by planting butterfly-friendly nectar plants with wide, flat clusters of brightly-colored, fragrant flowers. It’s a must visit place for the nature lovers and Bioscience students.
Thumboormuzhi Butterfly Park is one of the most famous tourist spot and the largest butterfly garden in Kerala. The butterfly garden is a natural habitat of butterflies and it has about 148 spices located near Chalakudy district of Thrissur, Kerala. These attractions are at a distance of about 17 kilometers from Chalakudy and 55 kilometers from Thrissur and is on the way to Athirappilly waterfall
Some of the butterflies that can generally be seen in the garden include lemon butterfly (Papiliodemoleus), southern birdwing (Troidesminos), common rose (Pachlioptaaristolochiae), light blue tiger (Tirumalalimniace), dark blue tiger (Tirumalaseptentrionis).
Butterfly-friendly plants which are grown in the park as feed for butterflies include Pagoda flower, rattle pods, Mexican heather or Hawaiian Heather, Rubiaceae, flame lily or fire lily, Heliotropism keralense (Medicinal Plant) and more. The park also includes a river view, virgin forest view, a beautiful garden and children’s park. The park is well equipped with a DTPC restaurant, bathing ghat, snack bar, Chinese pavilion, and washrooms and parking areas to make your trip comfortable.
Visiting time for Thumboormuzhi Dam and Garden is between 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Entrance fee for adults Rs 10 and for children Rs 5, along with camera fee of Rs 25. The best time to visit Thumboormuzhi Dam and Garden is between the months from February to May.
